My research uses human skeletal remains from archaeological excavation to reconstruct population history and ethnic identity. My geographic focus is on the ancient East Asian populations of China and Mongolia, and the ancient Middle Eastern populations of Egypt. I deal with questions regarding personal and population identity using biological markers of distance, evidence for infectious disease, patterns of trauma, gender differences in activity patterns, and cultural body modification.
