There is one school for blind and visually impaired students in Mongolia. It is located in Ulaanbaatar. Schools in the aimag centers do not have classes for visually impaired or blind students. The school in Ulaanbaatar has a Braille library and Braille printing equipment. There is also one library in Ulaanbaatar with books on tape at Secondary School No. 116. A significant portion of this collection comes from donations by Mongolian National Radio. The topics covered by the tapes include literature, training materials, music, plays, and science broadcasts. Support for the library also comes from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Zorig Foundation, and the Arvis Team.[1]

[edit] Braille in Mongolia

Braille is not widely used in Mongolia. Outside of the school for blind and visually impaired students there are no Braille reading facilities available and it is not used in public places for navigation. Additionally there are very few Mongolian books in Braille format.

[edit] Mobility

There are many challenges to blind and visually impaired people being able to function independently. Most public buildings are not handicap accessible, and neither is public transport. There are additional challenges such as constantly changing physical environments (construction and development), open manhole covers, and high curbs.
