Library Resource Development Programs

The ACMS has several programs to develop its own library and to increase cooperation among and access to local libraries and archives. Over the last two years, the Center has been working under the auspices of an American Institute for Yemeni Studies initiated and Council for American Overseas Research Centers coordinated program called "Local Archives and Libraries: A Collaborative Project of American Overseas Research Centers" (LALORC), which is intended to provide digital materials to the Digital Library for International Research (DLIR). The DLIR comprises a group of American Overseas Research Centers (AORCs) which cooperate to increase access to international information resources. A salient example of this cooperation is the DLIR union catalog which holds the records for library collections at two dozen AORCs, including the ACMS. The DLIR is also working toward offering increased access to digital resources, including databases such as JSTOR and scanned primary source materials.

The ACMS library has two complimentary aims in developing library resources. The first is working externally with local libraries and archives and internally at the ACMS library itself to improve the experience of patrons in terms of traditional library services and resources. The second is working for improved access to primary and secondary sources of information using information technologies.

The following are current and past projects and activities the ACMS has participated in to support these aims:
